Shotgun Cabin
New Kingston, NY
1,200 SF House Renovation & Addition
Completed 2024
Originally built in 1975 as a simple hunting cabin for weekenders, this home underwent a gut renovation inside and out to better serve its new full-time residents. The upgraded envelope is designed to increase the efficiency of a new wood stove and electric heat pump HVAC system, with new cavity insulation, additional rigid 'outsulation,' and a new cedar rainscreen replacing the existing faux log siding. New operable windows throughout open up mountain views and let in more daylight. The extension of the cabin's roofline with a covered porch addition furthers the connection to the wooded Catskills site. On the interior, walls were selectively removed and the kitchen relocated to replace small, dark rooms with a spacious open kitchen-dining-living-workspace with three exposures.
