Low Country Beach House
South Carolina
5,000 SF House
Completed 2021
Replacing an aging existing house, this new beachfront home reuses the existing foundation but elevates the structure for flooding and expands the living space for four generations of family visitors.
Overlooking the expansive beach and marshes of the Carolina coast, the design prioritizes views and connection to outdoor living on the east side, with broad sliding doors and porches. In contrast, the other facades remain more solid, utilizing angled bay windows that offer daylight and ocean views while maintaining privacy.
Flipping typical residential programming, we located the living room, dining space, and kitchen down the hall from the primary bedroom suite on the 2nd floor, taking advantage of the vaulted ceilings and elevated views for the communal spaces. The 1st floor houses the study and three guest bedrooms, each with access to the lower waterfront porch. Slicing a dramatic narrow atrium through the main house and the bunkroom wing, the “Mudslice” serves as a mudroom-like entry from the beach. In addition to providing storage for sandy beach gear, the Mudslice uses skylights and double-height windows to bring indirect light into private internal rooms.
